| an imaginary knife opens a catalog of real wounds
there were silent cruelties a taped mouth without tape
little tribes of children huddled against the child
they had their codes, silent little codes of half-smiles
bundled against the cold, bony fingers in tight fists
fingernails dig into flesh, yet the brain feels no injury
the most sensitive of all organs, yet feels no pain but the past
the flesh bears silent testimony a catalog of healing denied
little pictures painted big as voices scratch against the walls
blood-red shadows betrayed by light the past bleeds red on red
vermilion veils and warm wind as voices scratch against the walls
it's the canyon walls, gates to hell float like a feather, eyes closed
all so slow, until the bone cracks and time folds blood-red into earth |
