This class aims to help students think and write critically about literature. Students will be required to write four essays. The essays will be responses to readings. Each essay will not be graded. The essays will be kept in a manila folder, which will be collected toward the end of the semester. Students have the option to revise any or all of the essays. The folder must include all instructor-corrected drafts as well as any revised work. The set of essays will receive one grade. Two research papers will be assigned, one on poetry, the other on the short story. Each research paper will be a minimum of five pages and will include a works-cited page listing at least five sources. Fifty percent of each research paper grade will be based on the work-in-progress (including an annotated works-cited list and an abstract); the other fifty percent will be based on the polished, minimum five-page paper. The paper must be typed using the MLA format. The work for each research paper will be kept in a manila folder. The folder will be collected on the due date and must include the work-in-progress as well as the research paper. A midterm exam will be given and will be an in-class, one-question essay exam based on readings and discussions. A final exam will be given and will be an in-class, one-question essay exam based on readings and discussions. Each late essay will result in a one-quarter point deduction from the final grade of the set of essays. Each essay not turned in will result in a one point deduction from the final grade of the set of essays. Each late research project assignment will result in a one-quarter point deduction from the final grade of the research project. Only late work resulting from a medical emergency will not be penalized. All late work will be accepted only within a week of the due date. All assignments must be typed, double-spaced, and must include a cover page. Typed assignments must use Times New Roman font and size 12 point. Students will be expected to participate actively in class discussions. Those who arrive ten minutes late will be marked as absent. |
