This class aims to help students think and write critically about poems. Students will be required to write four essays. Essays will not be graded individually. Students will keep a portfolio of their essays, which will be collected toward the end of the semester. The portfolio must contain a complete set of the essays. Before the end of the semester, students will choose their best effort from among the essays they will have written; they will rewrite and improve further the chosen paper, which will then become a part of the portfolio and assigned a letter grade. That grade will be the grade for the portfolio. Students will not be given a grade for the essays without this final revision. The essay portfolio folder must include all the instructor-corrected drafts as well as the final-revision essay. In order to qualify for an "A," students will be expected to submit all essays. Each essay not submitted will mean one point lost from the highest attainable grade. In other words, a set of three essays will qualify only for a "B." A set of two essays will qualify only for a "C," and so forth. Of course, a more important factor in assessing the portfolio will be the quality of the work. Lastly, each late essay assignment will result in a one-quarter point deduction from the final essay portfolio grade; only medical emergencies will be allowed as an exception. Students will also write a journal. The journal will consist of personal responses to assigned readings. Students must complete at least ten one-page responses. A research project will be assigned. Fifty percent of the research project grade will be based on the work-in-progress (including an initial works-cited page, an annotated works-cited list, and an abstract); the other fifty percent will be based on the polished, six-page minimum (typed, double-spaced) research paper. The research paper must include a works-cited page listing at least ten sources. The research project folder must include the work-in-progress as well as the research paper. Lastly, each late research project assignment will result in a one-quarter point deduction from the final research project grade; only medical emergencies will be allowed as an exception. The final exam will be a take-home essay exam based on readings and discussions. Students will be expected to participate actively in class discussions. Those who arrive ten minutes late will be marked as absent. Students who are absent for the number of hours equivalent to two and a half times the number of units of the class will be automatically dropped. |
