This class aims to help students think and write critically about short stories. Students will write ten one-page journals. Two research papers will be assigned. Each research paper will be a minimum of five pages and will include a works-cited page listing at least five sources. Fifty percent of each research paper grade will be based on the work-in-progress (an annotated works-cited list and an abstract); the other fifty percent will be based on the polished, five-page minimum paper. A midterm exam will be given and will be an in-class, one-question essay exam based on readings and discussions. A final exam will be given and will be an in-class, one-question essay exam based on readings and discussions. Each late work will mean a one-quarter point deduction from the final grade of that assignment; only medical emergencies will be allowed as an exception All assignments must be typed, double-spaced, and must include a cover page. Students will be expected to participate actively in class discussions. Those who arrive twenty minutes late will be marked as absent. Students who are absent for the number of hours equivalent to two and a half times the number of units of the class will be automatically dropped. |
