Essay Assignments:

Essay 1: Write a minimum two page essay. 

                Write a personal narrative that describes your continuing struggle against risks and challenges even as you attempt to overcome an obstacle.

                In the introduction, state the thesis of Anna Quindlen's "Newcomers by Numbers"  and make a connection between Quindlen's essay and your thesis.  You do not have to write about the issue of illegal immigration.

Essay 2: Write a minimum three page essay.

                Reflect on the things that make life meaningful for you.

                In the introduction, summarize the plot and ideas of Alejandro Amenabar's The Sea Inside and use at least one quotation from a review of the film.  Make a connection between the film's ideas and your thesis.

Essay 3: Write a minimum three page essay.  Use at least two quotes from each poem.

                 Discuss the obstacles that Soledad, in Angela Manalang Gloria's "Soledad," and Binaay, in Ma. Luisa B. Aguilar's "The Secret Language," face in their desire to be happy.

Essay 4: Write a minimum four page essay.  Use at least three quotes from the short story.

                 Analyze Aida Rivera-Ford's "Love in the Cornhusks."  Describe Tinang's life.  Discuss the choices she makes and interpret the letter's significance to her life.
