Spanish 101
Course Description and
objectives:
A beginning course designed to develop proficiency
in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and to promote a basic
understanding
of Hispanic cultural patterns. The course is designed to provide the
first
year student with the capacity for basic oral and written communication
in the language. Spanish will be used often to facilitate the learning
of the language.
The objectives of the course are
to:
-Acquire basic Spanish grammar structure
-demonstrate acquisition of new vocabulary and grammatical concepts
-distinguish basic grammatical errors in Spanish from English usage
-demonstrate a general knowledge of customs, culture and civilization of
Spanish-speaking countries

Manual
Laboratory:15 hours required. Failure to complete hours will result in
an incomplete.
Students are responsible for all material presented in class, including
announcements about changes in course procedures.

Dictionaries: Spanish-English/English-Spanish
Computer usage knowledge is optional but recommended
Attendance:
You are responsible for all material presented in
class, including announcements about course procedures. Exams, quizzes,
language practice and homework often include questions on material
presented
only in class, so performance on these indirectly reflects
attendance.
Attendance represents 10% of your class grade. Missing one class means
2% of the grade, twice means 5% of the grade and three times means 10%
of the grade.
Students will be dropped from the class after the third unexcused
absence.
In addition please refer to the Cerritos College Catalog for excessive
absences policy.
Note: Cellular phone calls or beep sounds are disruptive. Please be
courteous
to the classroom environment and turn sound devices off.
Grading:
Examinations:
There will be exams following each chapter. Each
exam is worth 60 to 100 points. Exam dates will be announced in class at
least one week before the exam. (2 days for summer classes)
Oral and written reports, quizzes and class assignments are worth 20 to
50 points each
Homework assignments:
Workbook will be checked frequently. All
workbook
assignments must be completed by the end of the course.
In-class quizzes: Announced and unannounced quizzes will be given on an
irregular basis.
All exams, class work and homework must be completed in order to complete
this course, regardless of lateness.
Unexcused late course work will lose 10% of its
points
for each weekday that it is late.
Late assignments can be turned in at my mailbox in Santa Barbara.
Arrangements for "excused lateness" or "excused
absence"
(emergencies) must be made, if possible, in advance and approved by the
instructor.
Course grades will be assigned as follows:
Total points acquired at the end of the semester represent 75%
of your grade
Final Exam represents 15%
Attendance represents 10%
Total: 100%
A= 89.6% -100%
B= 79.6% - 89.5%
C= 69.6% -79.5%
D= 59.6% - 69.5%
F= 59.5% and below
Academic dishonesty will result in a course grade of F.
