Course Description and objectives:
Four hours lecture. The course provides a thorough review of grammatical concepts. It introduces the students to reading and interpretacion of literary works by Latin American and Spanish writers, and gives them the opportunity to write original compositions in Spanish, based on the readings. Class is conduced in Spanish. Students taken Spanish 4 must have completed Spanish 3 or equivalent approved courses from other institutions.
The objectives of the course are to:
- Demostrate acquisition of intermediate level Spanish vocabulary
- Demostrate an understanding of and the ability to correctly use intermediate level Spanish grammatical structures recognize and apply the rules of accentuation
- Apply grammar rules in writing compositions
- Read and discuss reading assignments in Spanish, and be able to communicate thoughts an ideas coherently
- Understand and apply writing techniques for a well-organized, well-developed essays that are relatively free of error and that reflect an increased ability to use the Spanish language and all its literary and grammatical nuances
- Analyze plot, character, setting, structure, theme, and poetic language of literary genres read in class
- Demostrate a general knowledge of culture and literature of Spanish-speaking socoeties, whitin and without the US
Required: Spanish 3 or equivalent with a grade of Credit or or higher
Textbook: Virgilio, Carmelo, Teresa Valdivieso and Edward Friedman.

Attendance:
You are responsible for all material presented in class, including
announcements
about course procedures.Exams, quizzes, language practice and homework
often include questions on material presented only in class, so
performance
on these indirectly reflects attendance. Attendance represents 1 Ol/. of
your class grade.
Missing one class means 2% of the grade, twice means 5% of the grade and
three times means 1 0% of the grade. Students will be dropped from the
class after the third unexcused absence. In addition please refer to the
Cerritos College Catalog for excessive absences policy.
