ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD, 9 Parts – 3 Tapes
Series ½” VHS

No No No No No No IMS

ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD, Tape 1
60 min ½” VHS 2363 Part 1: Classical Ideal-Greece & Rome
The origins of Western art traced to ancient Greece through kouroi and Korai (male and
Female) figures, as well as by the architectures of the Parthenon. From Greece to
Rome through the Helenistic period, the program focuses on the new artistic approach to
Human form and violent emotions that reached its pinnacle with altar of Zeus at
Pergamum.
Part 2: The Early Renaissance – Italy and Northern Europe
The revival of the classical tradition is explored and interpreted through the contributions
of Florentine artists in the early 15th century. Bruneleschi’s soaring dome for Florence’s
cathedral, Massacio’s use of linear perspective in painting, and the sculpture of Donatello
and Ghiberti exemplify the merging of Christian and classical values. In the North, the
richly detailed “magic realism” of Netherlandish painter Jan van Eyck emerges in the
newley developed medium of oil paint. Grunewald’s Isenheim altarpiece conveys the
spiritual crisis in Northern Europe on the eve of the Protestant Reformation, while
Albrecht Durer’s prints and drawing herald the arrival of the Renaissance in Germany.
Part 3: A White Garment of Churches – Romanesque and Gothic
The exquisitely preserved church of Paray-le Monial reveals how monastisicm and
Pilgrimage affected the architectural development of French romanesque churches in the
11th century, while Gislebertus’ sculpture at St. Lazare in Autumn illustrates the medieval
focus on heaven and fear of damnation. The triumph of the Gothic style is revealed
through close range studies of the Durham, Canterbury, St. Dennis and Chartres
cathedrals.

ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD, Tape 2
60 min ½” VHS 2364 Part 4: An Age of Reason, An Age of Passion
The decadence and corruption of the 18th century French nobility provoked political and
artistic reaction. The elegant allegories of Watteau and the Rococo fantasies of Boucher
were favored by the upper classes, but were rejected by a society that was in violent
revolt. Western artists turned to classical examples to restore balance and harmony to
their work. Jacques Louis David’s cool and ordered paintings a return to the noble
morality of a classical past. The French weapon for the new order, and inspire his
master piece “The Death of Marat.” The optimism of the Enlightenment is shattered in
the wake of the French revolution and Napoleonic Wars. A new “Romantic genre
emerges in paintings by Gericault, Delacroix, and Goya.
Part 5: The High Renaissance – Rome and Venice
With Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael, the artist as genius takes center stage.
Their works in variety of media – paintings, sculpture, drawing, and architecture –
define the esthetic values of the day and are destined to serve as standards of
excellence for centuries afterward. Under Papal patronige, Rome reemerges as a center
of artistic activity, while the Venetian preoccupation with theater, nature, and light is
captured in glowing works by Giorgione, Titian and Verones. Part 6: Realms of Light – The Baroque
The direct emotional appeal and theatrical power of the Baroque style, stimulated by the
Catholic Counter – Reformation, is epitomized in Bernini’s sculpture “The Ecstasy of
Saint Theresa.” The exuberant forms and colors of the Baroque found a home in Autria
where the Hapsburg dynasty made effective symbolic use of the Baroque style in the
Monastery of St. Florian, the Karlskirche, and the Belvedere Palace. Reuben’s
sensuous, opulent canvases made him the favorite court painter of kings and emperors,
while Velasquez, content to serve King Phillip of Spain, produced the ambiguous, many
merchants and other citizens were the patrons of artists such as Vermeer, Hals, and
Rembrandt.
Part 7: A Fresh View – Impressionism and Post-Impressionism
Courbet defies the entrenched traditions of the official Salon and Paints “The subjects of
modern life” as he sees them. His impulse is shared by other artists whose work would
be described as impressionism. The distinctive contributions of Monet, Renoir, Pisarro,
Degas, and Monet are emphasized. The term “Post-Impressionist” applied to Gauguin,
Seurat, Van Gogh, and Cezanne signifies not a common style, but a collective rejection
cultures in canvases of intense, saturated color. Through a methodical application of
Paint, Seurat attempted to wed science and art in “A Sunday on the Grande Jette.” Van
Gogh’s radical use of color expressed his tortured and exultant perceptions of the world.
In his vision of the subject as an arrangement in form and color, Paul Cezanne laid the
foundations of 20th century art.

ART OF THE WESTERN WORLD, Tape 3
60 min ½” VHS 2365 Part 8: In Our Own Time
After World War II, the center of the art world moves to New York for the first time. With
Jackson Pollack as dynamic innovator, the “Action Painters” or “Abstract Expressionist”
became an internationally influential force. The post war art world produces a
bewildering multitude of styles. Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and
Claus Oldenburg functions as participants, celebrants, and critics of modern society. By
the 1970’s and 80’s the mass media have triumphed, pervading every aspect of our lives
blurring the line between image and reality. For painters, sculptors, and architects who
have turned from the “less is more” of modernism, the past provided a rich mine of
images, allusions, and inspirations to be combined freely – and with a sense of humor –
in their “Post Modern” works.
