BMW donates
vehicles for repair
Victor Martinez
Cerritos College's Automotive Technology Department received a donation of two vehicles from BMW North America Monday.
The vehicles are both 2003 BMW 325ci models donated from Irvine BMW and Shelley BMW.
They will be used in the department's Auto Body Collision Repair program.
The Cerritos College Euro Car Training program will repair the vehicles to fully drivable condition.
"European cars' bodies and exterior paint coats are crafted very differently than domestic vehicles," explained Dr. Randy Peebles, dean of Cerritos College's Technology Division.
"By having an opportunity to restore these BMW's, our students will gain exposure to European auto body methods which are invaluable in the field."
The program is designed for students interested in automotive repair focusing on imports.
It provides experience used in the field of European and Asian car model repair.
For example, students are taught how to straighten a car after sustaining damage in a collision using a new device that elevates the vehicle and restores its frame to the original position.
The class meets Monday through Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
"These cars were donated because they were damaged. We were ready to take them to salvage for recycling," stated Sadir Haji, BMW regional after sales manager, western region.
"We're eager to start a partnership with Cerritos College. We support their endeavors to send skilled technicians into the field where they are so sorely needed."
