Automotive
Sheet Metal Fabrication Classes

The first dedicated class for this area of training
started in January 2003 - the next class was scheduled for Fall 2003
(August), two days per week for 18 weeks on Mondays and Wednesday evenings
from 6-10pm. Stay connected to this web page to find out additional
information as it becomes available again. Course numbers for Automotive
Fabrication courses are AB 75, 76, 77, and 79. Check the schedule for
the next available class. These classes have been operating during our
summer program starting in late May each year and run for 8 weeks for 4
nights per week, until mid July. AB 75 Body Panel
Modification is the beginning class, other more advanced classes follow that
offering. If you or someone you know is interested, when the new ticket numbers become available, you should enroll as soon as possible.
Any class without a minimum of 20 students by the first week is subject to
CANCELLATION. We look forward to continuing these advanced-skills
courses. BMW of North America and other local area body shops have expressed
interest in graduates from this and other of our collision repair courses.
They are searching for advanced students with high levels of skill in auto
collision repair and panel fabrication.
Overview:
Over the past several years, most of the major automotive
manufacturing companies have relocated their automotive design centers to
Southern California. Over 17 are located in Orange County alone. These
design centers create the new "look" for their products and produce the
initial "prototype" version of that vehicle. Many smaller shops become
involved in the prototyping process, some building several sub-sections of
each prototype including mechanical and electrical systems, interior and
trim, and of course the sheet metal components.
This has created an increased demand for technicians with
the skills required to take a flat piece of sheet metal and create a
complete body component to specifications. This class introduces students
to various techniques and tools used to accomplish fabrication tasks. These
skills are also used in other areas of automotive design including
customizing automobiles and restoration of hard-to-find components. The
first
18-week class started in August 2003 under the course number AB 75. The
next class meets four times per week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursdays starting in May and ending in July. These are 144 hours each
in each course, to be followed by other intermediate
and more advanced classes in the following Summer sessions.
