Course Description:

 

Reading 43 is for students reading up to grade level 10.0.  The course works on phonics, dictionary study, vocabulary, vocabulary in context, understanding the main idea, supporting details, transitions, patterns of organization, and inferences.

 

 

Books you need for this course:

 

            10 Steps for Building College Reading Skills – 3rd edition (Langan)

           

            Phonics Principles for American English (Broderick)

 

            Building Vocabulary Skills – Nist (short version) 3rd edition

                       

             A dictionary.  Recommended:  American Heritage Dictionary, latest edition

                       

            Everyday Heroes (optional for extra credit)

                        (Available for check-out in the Reading Center)

           

 

 

How you will be graded:

 

Rd 43 is offered as CREDIT/NO CREDIT only

All of the work we will do in class will prepare you for a series of reading tests you will take at the end of the semester.

You must have an overall 70% average on your class work to be eligible to take the final tests.

If you pass one of these tests, you pass the class.

If you do not pass the test, you will not earn “credit” for the class, you will receive a grade of “no credit”, and you will have to take the class over.

 

You can earn EXTRA CREDIT to help you pass this class:

 

Enroll in Reading 41T and complete the additional assignments in the Reading Center………………………………………...5 points added to final classwork percentage.

 

Overall average of 85% or better on classwork………5 points added to final exam score.

 

 

 

 

 

More Important Information

 

  1. Attendance will be taken at each class session.

You will not be given credit for being in class if:

1.        You sleep in class, or disrupt class.

2.        You are working on something for another class.

3.        You are doing “personal things” such as putting on make-up, text messaging, or  frequently leaving class to answer your phone.

4.       You do not have your books. Several copies of the texts are available for check out in the Reading Center PRIOR to class. Students must have their textbooks by the second week of class or you will be dropped.

5.        You arrive late or leave early. If you are late, check in with me after class, if you need to leave early, clear it with me prior to the start of class.

 

  1. If you are not showing up for class you will be dropped.  This is school policy.

If you miss more than 3 classes you will be dropped. Schedule your appointments/personal obligations around your class time. If you are having problems getting to class please meet with me or call and let me know what is going on. Get a class “buddy” that you can call for assignments if you have to miss class. If you cannot continue in class, please withdraw yourself.

 

 

     3.   If you are having problems or need extra help, please call me or come by during my office 

     hour.  If you miss a class it is your responsibility to find out when homework is due.

     Late work will not be accepted. Tests can be made up in the Reading Center within one              week of absence. 10% will be deducted from your test score.

 

 

Here is how to succeed in this class:

  • Attend class regularly and be on time for class
  • Stay for the entire class
  • Pay attention and participate…get involved!
  • Complete all of your homework and Reading Center assignments.
  • Find outside reading materials you enjoy, and practice your skills!

 

Reminder:  A nine week class requires dedication, focus, and a lot of concentrated study if you want to be successful. The reward for all of your hard work is having a 3-unit required class completed in just 9 weeks, leaving you more time to focus on your other courses or obligation. Definitely worth the effort!!!
