Fall 2001
For the fall 2001 semester ESCI 110 was not paired with EDT 4, and thus students were not required to post their term projects. Instead, students were given the option of posting their projects for extra credit. Here are links to those projects:
Vivian Samayoa: Fossils for Second Graders
Sun But: Astronomy of the Solar System, Resource Page for Third Grade
Desiree Dorado: Water Cycle Lesson Plan, Third Grade
Kimberly Nering: Fossils Lesson Plan, Second Grade
Spring 2001
For the Spring 2001 semester the ESCI 110 course was paired with EDT 4, a one unit credit/no credit internet course. With this extra unit, each student in the course was able to post a web page with either resources or a lesson plan keyed to the California science standards, in addition to writing a paper explaining and justifying their project.
Students were encouraged to start accounts with web service providers off campus so that their work will be portable. Although each student was required to turn in a paper, they were allowed to collaborate on the web sites.
Here are this semester's projects arranged by topic (sites that are no longer active are listed without links):
Astronomy of the Solar System
Weather
Water
Volcanoes
Rocks, Minerals and Fossils
Earth's Landforms
Plate Tectonics and Earthquakes
Fall 2000
Students were given the choice of developing a lesson plan or compiling resource materials for a single topic included within the California science standards for the grade level of their choice. Several students developed a web page as listed below:
Jennifer Reed: Rock and weather lessons for first and second graders
Marilu Rosales: Characteristics of rocks and minerals, lesson plan for fourth grade
Claudia Salguero: Resource page for plate tectonics, teachers of sixth grade
Other suggestions and useful information were collected by groups of students in the class. The following are some of the things they found useful or interesting:
Group 1: Jennifer Reed volunteered to post each group member's work on the web at the following location: ESCI 110, Group 1 Projects, Fall 2000
Group 2:
Group 3: This group elected to post parts of several different student projects:
Aileen Alonso-Perez found spectacular graphics illustrating plate tectonics
The group liked this suggestion from Laura Sander to engage parents in the
science lesson:
Before the day of this lesson plan, teachers are encouraged to request
pictures of their student's vacation trips, also requesting that these
pictures have the specific landforms needed. (An example of a letter is
provided at the end of this web-site).
Letter Requesting Pictures
Dear Parents,
We need your help. We will begin an earth science lesson plan next week.
We will be looking at what the earth is composed of and the different
landforms on earth. Some of these are mountains, oceans, rivers, valleys
and deserts. If you could please send with your child on Monday some
pictures of any family vacation trip that include any of these. Please
make
sure the landforms are visible.
Thank you,
