Information Technology Standards Committee

Desktop computers and the campus information technology infrastructure have become essential tools for faculty, staff, and students at Cerritos College. As a result of the continuing growth of desktop computing and the demand for support services, there has been a significant impact on resources. To improve efficiency and focus our central support efforts, we have implemented the following standards.  We strongly believe this will help contribute to a responsive, dependable, and supportable computing environment.

Cerritos College hardware and software standards have been established under the guidance of the Information Technology Standards Committee. The information technology department will also work with any individual areas if the established standards are an inappropriate fit.  Please contact Patrick O'Donnell x2171 or Lee Krichmar x2159 for customized assistance.  The most common upgrade recommendations include additional memory, faster CPU's, and/or larger hard drives, which are valuable for some specific types of applications.

Electronic classrooms and related equipment are included and are supported by Instructional Media Services under the supervision of John McGinnis.  Please contact John x 2413 for assistance.

Links to Current Standards:

The current standards will be reviewed on a quarterly basis.  If required, additional meeting will be called as necessary to review and recommend replacement for any products that need to be addressed due to "end-of-life" or discontinuation issues.  The Information Technology department will work with HP to attain demonstration hardware, especially for desktop computers, so that we can test and evaluate the products from a "hands-on" perspective.  We share the hardware during our scheduled meetings with all committee members, and invite anyone to "check-out" the computers at their convenience.

HP Desktop Justification & History

*The desktop PC standards have the largest impact on the campus because this impacts over 1800 computers.  We currently partner with Hewlett-Packard (HP), which has been very beneficial.  They provide additional services like image installation, customizing the BIOS settings for greater security, entering an electronic asset tag, affixing our "CC" asset tag and creating a custom physical label, which allows the installation & setup to go extremely smooth.  Each time a new desktop PC standard is created, the Information Technology department will create a new master image, which includes the complete list of software from the software standards.  When a new HP desktop PC is installed, it becomes usable within minutes due to the extensive preparation by HP.

In some circumstances, additional computing horsepower is required.  The information technology department will work with the individual areas to increase CPU speed, add additional memory, or add larger disk drives as appropriate & based upon their specific needs.

Future Investigations:

  1. DVI (Digital Visual Interface) - reviewing as a future standard
  2. Quad Core CPU - when might this be financially feasible as a standard?
  3. AMD vs. Intel Dual Core CPU testing
  4. Microsoft Vista OS - begin testing & determining the timeframe for changing our standard
