Power Information

Effective immediately, "Shut Down" your computer for the weekend.

During the week, please  "Log Off" only

During the weekday evenings we are performing maintenance for virus protection.  When your computer is "Shut Down", it is unavailable for automatic updating.

This procedure applies to faculty, staff, and lab computers.  Please power down the computers within lab environments whenever feasible during stage 2 or 3 alerts.

To Log Off your computer:
  1. Press the START button
  2. Select "Log Off"
  3. Press the "Power" button on the monitor

To Shut Down your computer:

Everyone can help by being conscientious regarding the use of energy.  Keep in mind these type of devices:

  • PCs

  • Monitors

  • Peripherals

    • Printers

    • Scanners

    • Speakers

    • Zip drives

  • Copy machines

  • Fax machines

  • Adding machines

  • Typewriters

  • Clocks

  • Refrigerators

  • Heaters

  • Fans

  • Stereos

  • TV sets

  • Coffee pots

  • Microwaves

  • Hot plates

In the case of staged power reductions the following applies:

1.  In a stage 2 alert, turn-off all electrical devices that are not being used or not necessary.  Leave on only what is critical for instruction.

2.  In a stage 3 alert, to the extent possible, turn-off any electrical devices, including computers, monitors, printers, scanners, etc. and turn to tasks that do not use electrical energy.

3.  The above policy also pertains to computer labs.  All machines in these labs should be powered-down and turned-off after the last class of the day or before closing the doors for the evening.  In the morning, do not turn on machines in the computer labs until they are necessary.  We do not recommend that the machines in the computer labs be turned-off and on several times during the day.  Rather, turn them on before the first class or first use and leave them on until after the last class of the day or before closing the doors for the evening.

4.  It is recommended that each division/department appoint one or more “monitors” who are “last out” to do a sweep of offices and/or labs in the evening to make sure all machines are off.

5.  All deans and managers are requested to check that all machines under their responsibility are connected to surge protectors.   When computers, etc. are turned-off, also turn-off the surge protector to avoid having everything come back on simultaneously once the power is returned.

6.  In the case of an unexpected loss of power, be sure to turn switches to the "off" position to avoid having everything come back on simultaneously once the power is returned.

7.  We include in our specifications (for purchasing new computers) to include the necessity of an ACPI compliant bios that will automatically put monitors, hard drives and CPUs into a sleep mode.
