Women's History Month Essay Contest Winners Presented with Scholarships
Winners of the Women's History Month Essay Contest were honored at a recent Board
of Trustees meeting.
Shivani Parmar won first place for her essay, The Gulabi Gang. Justin Carl Torres took second place for his essay Crossing the Boundary of One’s Potential: The Result of Discrimination. Richard V. Melendez placed third for his essay The Green Skai. Honorable mentions included Raul Garrido’s Angela Carter: Beneath the Tiger’s Skin, Tiana Flint’s The Vivification of Feminist Existentialism, Ana Paola Molestina’s Matilde Hidalgo do Procel : The Pioneer of Women’s Suffrage in Latin America, and Bianca A. Morinico’s An Everyday Hero.
English Instructor Michelle Fagundes and Philosophy Professor Ana Torres-Bower presented each student with a scholarship from the Cerritos College Foundation. First prize was $250, second place was $150, third prize was $100, and honorable mentions received $50.
The essay contest required submissions to analyze a woman whose dedication to community engagement has helped promote equality within that community. A total of 36 essays were submitted.
"We're very proud of these students for expressing their ideas so well in their essays," said Torres-Bower. "Congratulations all!"
The winning essays will be available on the college's WHM web page in the coming weeks.
