Cerritos College Celebrates President Scholars Graduates

19 High School Students Complete Academy

President Scholars Academy graduatesCerritos College celebrated the second cohort of its President Scholars Academy in May. Nineteen high school students from the College’s partner unified school districts, ABC, Norwalk/La Mirada, Bellflower, Paramount, and Downey graduated from high school and completed 24.5 units of Cerritos College credit courses. Six of their eight Cerritos College classes they completed are transferable to the California State University and University of California systems.

The President Scholars Academy, formerly known as Middle College Scholars’ Program is designed for students who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) related field. In the Academy, students make a two-year commitment starting in their 11th grade year. They attend high school in the morning, and take classes at Cerritos College in the afternoon. On Fridays, students volunteer at a local middle or elementary school. The program also offers weekly tutoring in which students can work on class assignments.

The first cohort of sixteen students completed the Academy in 2016. Twenty-one third cohort students are taking English 100 this summer, and will be joined by a new student group in fall.

The Academy graduates went on to attend universities including UC Berkeley, Purdue, Seattle University, UC Riverside, Whittier College, and Cerritos College.
