Description
This course focuses
on effective management and operation of automotive repair facilities. Students
are introduced to skills required for effective management and promotion of an
automotive repair facility. Areas of training include development of policies,
rules and regulations, job-costing, equipment and material procurement, facility
cost analysis, safety, employee and right-to-know issues, and warranties. Other
topics include department operations, job functions, compensation packages,
production controls, capacity planning, cycle-time analysis, customer
satisfaction, licensing and certification, effective communication skills,
process improvement, and time management. This course may be taken for a
maximum of 6 units.
Students will be trained in computerized shop management including: ROME CompleteShop Computerized Management System. (used with permission and support from ROME Technologies, Inc.) Students will have access to campus computer labs and course software will be made available via web-based servers through the internet. As a result of successfully completing this course students will be able to: Create a business plan identifying functions, equipment needs, personnel needs, financial needs and other aspects of an automotive business, including: 1. Set-up costs - business licenses, permits, leases and related costs. 2. Perform cost analysis of fixed and flexible overhead expenses 3. Amortize fixed-costs per repaired unit, factoring material costs, parts, labor, and other costs and determine net profit in percentages & dollars 5. Research and list needed materials & sources with costs for a facility. 6. Provide plans for hazardous waste storage / disposal. 7. Develop a floor plan, locating offices, work stalls, storage, equipment, parking, etc. 9. Design a marketing plan for a business, including target market base, service area, initial budget and annual recurring budget. 10. Define an employee development policy for each job description within the business. 11. Develop an operational budget for one year of shop operation. 12. Develop “fingertip controls” for monitoring progress of business. 13. Identify Department Operations within this Business 14. Identify the customer’s and employee’s rights within the law. Body Shop Management Software Aspects of this class 1. Perform specific daily operations of a typical body shop using one or more shop management systems 2. Evaluate the performance of the software in the applied tasks 3. Determine recommended use of the software for a variety of body shop applications 4. Compare and contrast the performance of various management systems 5. Determine a cost/benefit analysis and break-even point for acquisition of each system reviewed. |
