Course Description

This course expands abilities in effective management and operation of automotive collision repair facilities.  The course includes presentation of the wide range of skills required to effectively direct, manage and promote a repair facility.  Areas of training include rules and regulations related to the automotive repair industry, job costing, equipment and material procurement, facility cost analysis, department operations, safety, employee and right-to-know issues, warranties, customer satisfaction, licensing and certification, consolidator and franchise body shop operations and the identification and function of Direct Repair Programs (DRP’s).

As a result of successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

A.    Identify applicable rules, regulations and authority for collision repair facility  operations and appropriate segmentation of satellite businesses to limit liability

B.           Select and identify appropriate equipment, materials and vendors for collision repair facility under the following conditions:

1)       DRP compliance

2)       Volume Pricing for multiple locations – shared purchasing

3)       Consolidator organizations

4)       Automotive Dealership Collision Centers

C.           Identify and properly use nomenclature specific to the industry

D.          Provide calculations for ‘right-sizing’ a repair facility including administrative overhead for multi-location organizations

E.           Develop procedures for acquisition, operation, and maintenance of the following:

1)       Direct Repair Programs (Insurance Company-specific)

2)       Multi-Shop Operations (multiple shops with common ownership)

3)       Consolidator Organizations (multiple shops with stockholders-public)

4)       Franchise Organization (such as MAACO, 1-Day Auto, etc.)

5)       Cooperative Associations (such as Fix Auto etc.)

6)       Dealerships

F.           Identify sources for necessary licensing and certification of repair facility and personnel

G.           Provide policy for human resource development within a collision repair facility

1)       Consider formal “in-house” training programs

2)       Collaborative Training with other organizations

3)       Industry Certification of Technicians and Professionals

4)       Internal Training for position advancement

H.          Compare and contrast traditional shop operations with consolidation, and/or high production franchise organizations

I.            Identify available DRP programs and qualifications for their attainment and maintenance

Students will have access to campus computer labs and course software will be made available via web-based servers through the internet.
