Course Description

This course focuses on production management and improving workflow in automotive repair facilities.  The course includes job analysis, task prioritizing, job descriptions, flow-charting, capacity planning, parts and material procurement, production controls, cycle-time analysis, and development of key controls for management.   

As a result of successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

A.     Identify production management career opportunities

B.      Locate and reference procedure explanation in labor time guides

C.      Interpret the meaning and location of accepted procedures in manual

      and computerized systems

D.   Accurately identify models of vehicles & record vehicle ID number and manufacturing date

E.   Properly identify components of automobiles

F.   Provide appropriate research of correct parts and replacement labor in labor

      time guides and in computer estimating systems

G.      Identify various methods of compensation and demonstrate their intended use

H.     Alternate with other students as shop foreman on a rotation basis

I.       Determine profitability level for a shop at various productivity levels

J.    Calculate profit & productivity differences between hourly and flat rate pay plans

K.      Provide an improved shop layout floor plan for a designated body shop

L.       Develop flow charts showing current and improved work flow within selected shop

M.    Demonstrate repair order assignments to technicians and teams based on

      difficulty of work and ability of technicians

N.     Provide for a process and review of the quality of work performed

O.     Interpret handwritten & computer estimates & shop management  reports

P.       Provide a parts print out with part numbers and prices

Q.    Analyze profitability of anticipated repairs

R.      Perform a job-cost to specific repairs determining profit on labor, parts,

      materials and sublet repairs after simulated job completion

S.      Maximize personal time management and shop productivity

1.  Develop action plans for each new job

2.  Review action plans to determine improved process or sequence of repair

3.  Consider reallocation of tools, materials, layout, work assignments for improved productivity

Students will have access to campus computer labs and course software will be made available via web-based servers through the internet.
