Certificate: Dental Assisting

What made you come to Cerritos College and why?

My choice on coming to Cerritos College was purely based on the dental assisting program. Shortly after I graduated, I decided to start my career here, because they offer a program that sets you up with certificates and registration to become a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), which is essential if you want to maintain your career as a licensed RDA or a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA).

A registered dental assistant provides more stability. It’s a really big plus to know it’s here at Cerritos. Upon the completion of the program, we’re eligible to take the board exam(s), which is a major asset, because most programs don’t have that. My goal is to go to a four year university, further my education, and become a dentist.

I’ve had a real passion for teeth, an interest in the older audience, and a desire for more knowledge. This program has pushed me to branch out into the audience I want to target when I am a dental assistant or dentist. I would definitely say that the dental assisting program has helped carve a great career path for me.

STUDENT ADVICE

My advice for fellow students considering the DA program is to do it! This profession is a lifelong skill added to your background and it ensures a safety net if you’d like to change or switch your career.

Be persistent, dedicated and precise when choosing your career, because you need to make sure that you’re having fun. You need to make sure that what you are taking an interest in, is something that you can see yourself doing, short term and long term.

Our instructors take the time to make sure you understand the curriculum that’s being taught. This has encouraged me to push forward in my dreams to become a dentist. The program can be the start of your dreams. Give it some thought and choose your path, because what can go wrong?

INSIGHT

I like working with my hands. I feel like if the person who is applying also likes doing physical things it would be perfect for them, because we’re not just sitting in front of books all day. You get experience learning the instruments and handling them. It’s very hands on and very fun. The community here is great!

Ms. Cosio has helped me with personal challenges. For example, if you don’t have funds for parking, she’ll help you with a plan. She helps you network with different faculty and dental personnel to broaden your career opportunities. She and Ms. Saucedo will also introduce you to our campus resources, like Falcon’s Nest. I would definitely say that our instructors are loving and they actually help you. It’s not just like, “I’m going to give you the work and you do it.” They’ll sit with you, take the time, show you and make sure you’re retaining the information.

The program also helps you network since we go to USC and professional conventions. We have to make sure that we complete certificates to gain more knowledge and have patient interactions. It’s very good; it’s eye-opening. I’d recommend this program.
