Cerritos College Art Gallery - Exhibition: Savage Sentimentality
11:00 am
Fine Arts & Communications Available from Sept. 2 - Oct. 5, 2014
OPENING: Tues, Sept 2 @ 6-9PM

Savage Sentimentality presents a group of artists from unique backgrounds and interests connected by a tenuous relationship to sentiment. The artists included embrace sentiment while simultaneously ravaging it, either with a brutish material or a subject matter that contradicts the sensitivity of material handling. While the individual artists included in this exhibition draw from a myriad of sources broadly considered sentimental in nature, the end result is very different than the effects of kitsch. Instead of being a sentimental regress into a state of comfort, or a carefully maintained closed system of signs, the result is an acknowledgment and active agitation of that state.

OPENING: Tues, Sept. 2 @ 6-9PM

Los Angeles is the land of the self-obsessed and superficial. This is the common and not (completely) untrue, stereotype of LA. With good weather and a wide variety of landscapes, culture and people, the unique and sprawling metropolis has a lot to offer. As the result of its distinct and conceited character, self-referentiality is common. The phrase, "that's so LA", is ubiquitous. But what is LA? Is it the city, the suburb, the freeway, the beach, the people, the Industry? Everyone has a different conception of the city and its network of micro-neighborhoods and vast geography. Whether they're exploiting the novelties or embracing the mundane, the artists included in this group exhibition have a variety of interpretations of the physical and psychological space of LA.
