Sample Questions to ask City Councils about Earthquake Preparedness
Questions to ask your City Council Members
As a class assignment, I am to ask you the following questions and to report back to my class about your answers.
Before 9/11 the Federal government determined that the three most likely events that would be disasters for the United States were:
Terrorist attack on New York
Significant hurricane to hit New Orleans
Significant earthquake on the southern San Andreas Fault
The news tells us that the first two have happened. My Earth Science Instructor tells us that the probability of the third event happening during my life time is 100%.
Question 1: Do you have plans for such an event including evacuation routes, evacuation centers, food and supply stock piles, medical aid, etc?
Plans, if not known by the true first providers are worthless. We, the citizens, are the true first providers because we have to deal immediately with the effects of the event.
Question 2: How are you informing the citizens of your plans, the location of the evacuation centers, etc?
On Sunday, November 6, 2005, the Los Angeles Times had a front page article commenting on the fading memories of our elected officials to the Northridge earthquake which happened 11 years ago. We citizens also have fading memories of this event.
Question 3: How do you plan to continue to inform the citizens of your plans and any future modifications of those plans?
