This is a laboratory class that will be conducted to supplement the ESCI 101 Lecture. To be enrolled you must have taken ESCI 101 and passed with a C or better, or be concurrently enrolled in ESCI 101.
A laboratory class is where you learn by doing. It is a place to make mistakes and learn from them. Lecture will be held to a minimum, with only enough to explain the material. Most of the lab work is really self-explanatory. I encourage you to work in groups during the laboratory period. A word of caution in that if you let one of your group do all of the work, that person is the only one learning.
Your laboratory work will be checked for accuracy. Failure to turn in such work will result in 2.5 points for each being deducted from your class total. Because the Quizzes follow so closely behind the lab work, you may turn the lab work in after the Quiz.
The following are dates that are important to you.
January 21
Last day to add. There will be no exceptions to this.
February 11
Last day to drop without a "W".
February 11
Last day to select CR/NC grading option.
April 15
Last day to drop with a "W".
Your final grade will be determined by your grade on a series of quizzes. You may call them tests if you like. The quizzes will be taken from the lab work and you will be expected to be able to answer similar questions as were on the lab assignments. The quizzes will not be a group effort. Each person is expected to do their quiz on their own!
Drops
I may drop you for inappropriate conduct or excessive absences. the school defines excessive absences as more than 12.5% of the class time. For this class that means two (2) class periods. During the first two weeks of class, when I am the only person who can add or drop you, I will assume that any absence means that you are not interested in staying in the class. I will adopt this as long as I have people waiting to get into the class.
You will receive a letter grade on each Quiz. For final grading purposes, these letter grades will count as follows: A = 95 pts., A- = 91, B + = 89, B = 85, B- = 81.
Your Final Grade will be computed on the following scale:
A = 360
pts.
B = 320
pts.
C = 280
pts.
D = 240
pts.
