Summer 2008 Priority Enrollment Newsletter

Please read this newsletter for information on how to enroll for Summer 2008 classes through Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS).   All QUALIFIED students with disabilities (in good standing) who have applied for DSPS assistance before Wednesday, March 12th will receive an appointment for PRIORITY ENROLLMENT.  Summer 2008 classes begin Monday, May 19th.
 

Priority Enrollment begins THURSDAY, APRIL 17th
 

 You may enroll in classes one of the following ways:



* ONLINE:
  through 
Use MyCerritos to enroll in classes, make payments, view financial aid status, class schedule, unofficial transcripts, and more!  at www.cerritos.edu on or after the day and time shown on your appointment letter.

PLEASE NOTE:
  MyCerritos will be upgraded April 7th and will have some major changes.  Please call for assistance if you have trouble using MyCerritos to enroll in Summer classes.
 

* BY PHONE:  Call (562) 865-3276 on or after the day and time shown on your appointment letter.  Call from your home phone, any off-campus phone or any campus pay telephone (it's free), but DO NOT USE A CELL PHONE!      

* IN PERSON:  If you need assistance enrolling or did not receive an enrollment appointment.

Be sure to complete the following items on the ENROLLMENT CHECKLIST.

ENROLLMENT CHECKLIST FOR SUMMER 2008

In order to receive a Priority Enrollment appointment or to attend Priority Walk-In Enrollment, you must complete the following items before April 16th:

 

 

1.         COLLEGE APPLICATION:  You must have a current Cerritos College application on file or be enrolled in Spring 2008 classes.  If you sat out a semester (other than Summer) you are a Re-admit Student and must go to the Admissions Office (X2211) to file an Application to Cerritos College, or file online.  

 

2.       DSPS APPLICATIONEVERY DSPS STUDENT MUST have a 2008-
          2009 "DSPS Application for Services
” on file in the DSPS Office
          (Santa Barbara Building). 
If you need to renew your application, you may
          walk in to the Santa Barbara Building during normal business hours or, to
          ensure someone is available when you arrive, you may call extension 2335 for
          an appointment.  Your "DSPS application for Services" must be renewed
          before Priority Enrollment.  Make an appointment now to renew your DSPS
          application or plan to come on one of the following days:

3.        PLACEMENT TESTS If you have not yet completed the Cerritos College Placement Tests, it is best to do this before planning your classes.  Call extension 2355 or go to Career Services in the Administration Building for more information.

 

4.        ACADEMIC ADVISING:  If you need help choosing classes, call Counseling (extension 2231) to make an appointment with an Academic Counselor, or call DSPS (extension 2335) for an appointment with one of our Counselors: Phil Salazar, Liz Page, Dan Hansch or Felipe Salazar.  Please note that appointments in DSPS are very limited so call ASAP if you would like to see a counselor in DSPS.  If you are on Probation, the College requires you to create a Probation Contract by seeing a Counselor or attending a Probation Workshop.  You will be blocked from enrolling until this is done.   

 

5.         FEES:  Make arrangements to pay the required Enrollment Fees.  Consult the schedule of classes for information on fees.  Fees must be paid within 5 days of enrollment or you will be dropped from your classes and will have to re-enroll.   If you wish to apply for a Board of Governor's Grant (BOGG) or other financial assistance, contact the Financial Aid Office (extension 2397).  The BOGG must be renewed each year and covers enrollment fees only, NOT the health fee, lab/materials fees, or parking.

 

 

6.         SERVICES:  If you plan to use any DSPS Classroom-Related Support Services (for example, test-taking assistance, note-taking assistance, interpreters, etcetera), make an appointment to meet with your Disability Specialist for approval of your completed Summer 2008 Service Request Form (SRF). Your Specialist may want to see a copy of your "Educational Plan" for Summer so plan to get this from a Counselor first.  Please call extension 2335 if you are not sure who your Specialist is.

Info for Students with Physical, Psychological, or Visual Impairments:  For all NEW and RETURNING students who need any special services such as alternate media, note-taking or test-taking accommodations for Summer, it is very important that you make an appointment to meet with Judi Holmes.  Visually Impaired students need to contact Judi Holmes immediately after enrollment to make arrangements for Alternate Media, if needed.  Waiting until the end of the Spring Semester will result in delays receiving these Summer services.  Call Isabel Aguilar at (562) 860-2451 extension 2336 to make an appointment with Judi as soon as possible – her appointments fill up quickly!

Info for students with Speech Communication Problems:  Students who plan to enroll in Summer classes need to contact Ellen Horvath or Susanne Seiden at (562) 860-2451 extension 2351 to arrange for services.

for students with Hearing Impairments:  Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing students who have counseling or other enrollment-related appointments should contact Mary D’Ettorre at least 5 days prior to the appointment to arrange for an interpreter.  Mary can be reached at (562) 860-2451 extension 2352  voice, (562) 467-5043 TTY or by e-mail at mdettorre@cerritos.edu.  Also, if you would like to have interpreting, real-time captioning, note-taking services or Assistive Listening Devices for Summer 2008, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you contact the Speech Clinic in SS225 to fill out the SRF as soon as possible!

Info for students in Ms. Nakasone’s MBS Classes:  If you are a student in Ms. Nakasone’s afternoon MBS class and plan to enroll in other classes during the Summer, please call Ms. Nakasone at (562) 860-2451 extension 2348.

 

 

 

OTHER ENROLLMENT NOTES...

 

Bookstore Assistance: 
Remember, you can now shop for your textbooks ONLINE, or get the Book List information for your Department of Rehabilitation Counselor at www.cerritos.bkstr.com.  If it is impossible for you to do your own textbook shopping,  the Bookstore offers limited on-campus special help.  Call our Service Facilitator, Gerri Greene (extension 2337) for details on how to sign-up.

 

Department of Rehabilitation Assistance:  Call your local Department of
Rehabilitation Office for any Rehab-related enrollment needs...especially remember to arrange for Bank Drafts to pay enrollment fees several weeks before enrollment.  Please note that the bookstore will NOT accept DR authorizations.  Ask your DR counselor if you may pay for the books and be reimbursed, just be sure to ask BEFORE you buy your books. 

 
Orientation/Campus Tour:  Our DSPS Counselor, Liz Page, will be providing an Orientation and Campus Tour for new students with special needs.  The tour will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13th in the Santa Barbara Building.  Please contact Daisy Valdivia (extension 2335) to sign up if you would like to become more familiar with the Cerritos College Campus...find your classrooms, find accessible entrances and restrooms, etcetera.


Planning to stop by?  Due to our high volume of contacts, please remember it is better to call before you drop by any of our offices so that we can be sure someone will be available to assist you.
 

Special Parking:  Students with both a DP PLACARD and a CERRITOS COLLEGE STUDENT PARKING PERMIT may use staff parking stalls if an extra-wide Blue Curb Stall is not needed/available.  Students who need to use Blue Curb Parking will find this conveniently located around campus.

 

ELEVATOR ACCESS:  IMPORTANT!

For continuing Elevator access on our campus, your Speed Pass must be renewed each year.  If your Speed Pass fails to work, come to the Santa Barbara Building to request an update.  If you allow your Speed Pass to expire, it will not be activated for at least 48 hours after you renew it, so plan ahead!
