TECHNOLOGY UPDATE!
For several years,
the staff of the DSPS program at Cerritos College has used the Kurzweil 3000
program, a text-to-speech tool, to assist visually impaired students, as
well as those with learning disabilities who have trouble interacting with
and synthesizing printed material.
Kurzweil 3000 has traditionally been used for students with dyslexia and
other disabilities, but its features are such that it is beneficial across
the board. DSPS staff recently participated in a Kurzweil 3000
workshop to improve their skills and learn new applications for the
venerated program.

Disabled Student Programs and Services places tables and/or chairs in
classrooms to accommodate the needs of students with disabilities.
DSP&S also provides seating accommodations for sign language interpreters
and real-time captionists. This furniture is clearly marked with the DSP&S
Symbol of Access (wheelchair) logo. If you find these tables
and/or chairs in your classroom, please do not remove them because students
who use these rooms at different times during the week need these items.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact Isabel Aguilar in the
Alice Collins Resource Center for Disabled Students (SBB-6) at
iaguilar@cerritos.edu or call her at extension 2336.

Distance education is
becoming an increasingly important tool for college learning. Growing
numbers of classes at Cerritos College and other colleges and universities
are being offered. These classes often require computer skills in order to
participate on-line. On-line classes offer you the opportunity to
learn from home on your own computer.
Do you have the computer savvy necessary to enroll in an on-line class?
DSP&S can help you pick up the skills you need to participate in the
important new learning experience. If you would like to have some
tutoring or training in basic computer skills in order to get started in a
distance education class, ask your disability specialist for an ATTIC
referral to the Instructional Support Center (ISC).
Our computer instructors will help you cover the basics of logging on,
loading disks and using them to complete your assigned tasks. Be sure
to take advantage of this support offered in the ISC so that your distance
education experience will be successful.

GOT MATH?
Many students are unaware of the opportunities they have for getting help
with their math classes. From MATH 20 on up there is support for math
students who find that they are having difficulty with their coursework.
First of all find out if your instructor has office hours when you can go
talk to him or her in person to work on understanding math concepts.
Secondly the Academic Support Center (ASC) hosts math tutoring six days a
week. There is almost always a math instructor or math tutor there to
work with you.
Thirdly the Instructional Support Center (ISC) of DSP&S offers tutoring with
students who have made the scholar’s honor’s program and have mastered their
own math skills. There is no reason not to ask for help.

Something New to Know
About: YogAbility
There are a lot of exercise regimes out there. One ancient form of
stretching is being adopted for the disabled. For many people, Yoga
has been successful in maintaining and building muscular strength,
flexibility and coordination, while decreasing pain and increasing
relaxation. YogAbility is available to anyone who is searching for an
effective and gentle form of exercise and relaxation. The poses are designed
for people with disabilities or special needs, as well as those who are
unable to participate in other forms of exercise. Some of the people
who have benefited from YogAbility include children with Down Syndrome or
learning disabilities, adults and seniors in rehabilitation as well as
individuals in wheelchairs.

Accessible Van Now Available
Cerritos College has recently purchased a new full sized van. Because
of the college’s on-going commitment to students with disabilities the van
was out fitted with wheelchair lift and tie down capabilities.
This state of the art van is, in addition to its other functions, available
for use by students who need wheelchair access transportation to attend
college sponsored events or field trips.
DSP&S Specialist Judi Holmes says that many people on campus participated in
making the special day possible. “The people in Facilities [the
department on campus that purchased the van] were extremely helpful in
making sure we were comfortable with the operation before leaving campus.”
The van can accommodate two large electric wheelchairs, plus four other
passengers, including the driver. This new tool for serving students
is a welcome addition to the services that Cerritos makes available to its
students. Our goal is the inclusion of all students in campus
activities.
