Experimental Photography
Assignment #2 - Cameraless Photography Please hand in this sheet in a protective envelope with with your prints. Assignment Description: We shall work directly with light and light sensitive materials without intervention from optics. Experiment with at least three or more of the following processes: cyanotype (blueprint), photogram (and its derivatives the "lumen" print, luminogram, chemigram, cliché verre), and flatbed scanner photogram (scanogram). Hand in three prints. Related Reading Assignment: Excerpts from Experimental Vision: the evolution of the photogram since 1919 by Floris Neusüss; Thomas Barrow; Charles Hagen, 1994 Assignment Objective: This assignment is intended to broaden the student's appreciation and understanding of photography's possibilities. Here we abandon the notion of photography as a window of reality. Rather, alternative processes involving exploration of light and shadow in layered densities are to be undertaken in service of the imagination. Suggestions: Avoid the trite and trivial. Ask yourself what your pictures would sound like if they were music. Evaluation Criteria: Craftsmanship - Contrast Value (appropriate lightness / darkness) Aesthetic / Conceptual refinement (accomplishes assignment description and meets objective) Risk and playfulness Grade ___________ Student Name_______________________________ Teacher Comments: |
