Film Development Steps
XTOL 1:1 @ 68 degrees (5 oz. developer + 5oz. water per roll)
See the chart on the wall for film developing times.
For more contrast, increase time. For less contrast, decrease time.
Make sure the temperature of the developer is 68 degrees. Begin by putting the developer in a beaker and adding an equal amount of water. Insert a thermometer. If the temperature is colder than 68 degrees, fill a tray with hot water and set the beaker in the tray until the temperature is right. If it is warmer than 68 degrees, ask the lab tech for a bottle of ice and place it in a tray of cold water with the beaker until the temperature is right.
Pour the developer in the film development tank as if you were pouring a beer, so as to minimize bubbles. Agitate for the first thirty seconds followed by five seconds every half-minute. Gently tap the tank after each cycle to release bubbles that may be clinging to the film.
Pour the developer in the sink. Do not recycle.
Stop Bath
Rinse out the beaker and add 10 oz. per roll of undiluted stop bath.
agitate constantly for 15-30 seconds.
Recycle by pouring into the stop bath recycle container.
Fixer
Rinse out the beaker and add 10 oz. per roll of undiluted fixer.
Agitate for the first thirty seconds followed by five seconds every half-minute.
Fix for 8 minutes.
Recycle by pouring into the fixer recycle container.
Wash 1 minute under running water.
Hypo-Clearing Agent
Rinse out the beaker and add 10 oz. per roll, undiluted.
Agitate constantly for two minutes.
Recycle by pouring into the hypo-clearing agent recycle container.
Wash 5 - 10 minutes under running water.
Remove film from reel.
Photo-Flo
Rinse briefly without making bubbles. Hold diagonally to let excess wetting agent drip off.
Drying Cabinet
Hang film carefully with a clothespin as a weight on the bottom. Wait 30 seconds after you shut off the fan to open the cabinet door. Do not disturb other student's film. Make sure the cabinet is closed. Do not alter the temperature settings of the cabinet.
For best results air-dry without the fan. For a quicker drying time use the heating fan.
