Color Photography
Assignment # 1 - Imperative Color Please hand in this sheet together with your print packed in an archival clear sleeve with museum board backing. Your print can be whatever size you deem appropriate. Include a CD with unflattened adjustment layers, and contact sheets of your RAW files. If working hybrid (scanned negatives or transparencies), include a small 4 x 6 contact sheet provided by a commercial lab, or your original transparencies in plastic sheets. If any of the above elements are missing the assignment will be marked "incomplete." Assignment Description: Use color for a reason. Make a stunning color photograph that wouldn't work in black and white. Then make a second print of the same image, except this time use a channel mixer adjustment layer to desaturate the color completely. Be sure that your black and white version is not tinted with a hue. Present both prints side by side. Assignment Objective: This project is intended to help the student become conscious of why they made the decision to produce photographs in color instead of black and white. This analysis will be ongoing throughout the semester. Suggestions: Think of color as a distillation of emotion. Let color take possession of your intellect. Optionally, consider enhancing the color of your image by adding a hue / saturation adjustment layer to your digital file. Don't overdue it, but rather seek to find the correct harmony and balance. Evaluation Criteria: Craftsmanship - Sharpness Exposure Contrast Value (appropriate lightness / darkness) Needs dodging and / or burning Cleanness Aesthetic / Conceptual refinement (accomplishes assignment description and meets objective) Grade ___________ Student Name_______________________________ Teacher Comments: |
