Experimental Photography
Assignment #5 - The Magic Lantern

Please hand in this sheet with your slides in a plastic slide sheet.

Assignment Description:
Experiment with images that move through time in a specific sequence. Produce a series of three or more slides that open the door to what Hermann Hesse called The Magic Theatre, "a world of pictures, not realities." Shoot a roll of color slides. High quality digital files are also acceptable. The first image in your sequence must include text on an actual door. This will function as the title of your contribution to the slide show, hinting at what lay behind. (Please note that three good photographs are better than five or more mediocre ones.)

Assignment Objective:
The student will get hands-on exposure to a variety of slide show techniques and options, both antique and contemporary. An understanding of sequencing photographs through time will be cultivated.

Suggestions:
The photographs in your sequence should have continuity both formally and referentially. Therefore, make them either all vertical or all horizontal. Concentrate on generating an atmosphere, a sense of place, a mood, an altered state, a magical, surreal imaginative fantasy or nightmare.

Aesthetic / Conceptual refinement (accomplishes assignment description and meets objective)
