Assignment #1 - Fuji Photomontage Assignment Description: Each member of the class will draw a piece of paper out of a hat describing a body part. They will be responsible for that section of the body. This zone must be a montage of several Fuji 100c emusion lift prints. The scale should be more or less 50% life size. Feel free to work with more than one person or gender from various angles. Together we will construct Frankenstein. On a designated day we will work together to erect a satisfying gestalt. The student is encouraged to make additional photomontages for extra credit. These may be done employing black and white, color film, or digital capture and appropriated materials. Related Reading Assignment: Photomontage by Raoul Hausmann from Photography in the Modern Era: European documents and critical writings, 1913-1940, edited by Christopher Phillips Assignment Objective: Photomontage has a long history in pop culture, advertising, early modernist art, as well as political art and postmodernism. The student is encouraged to study and come to an understanding of these particular uses. This assignment is an introduction to the various techniques involved in photomontage involving myriad applications and approaches. This assignment will focus on the Fuji emulsion lift process, thereby familiarizing the student with that technique. We will also endeavor to learn how to collaborate in a group. Like Dr. Frankenstein, we will make an effort to give life to dismembered parts by bringing them into a coherent whole. Suggestions: Please show good taste and discretion in what you choose to reveal. Consider the space between and around the prints as part of the work. You can also overlap images. Communicate with the students who have body parts directly next to the part you have chosen. Ask for help if you need it.
