Portrait Photography
Assignment #6 The Final Project
Please hand in this sheet in a protective plastic sleeve together with your proof sheet(s), your prints, and acid-free conservation board.
Assignment Description:
This assignment will unfold in three phases.
1. Do three portrait sessions with three individuals. Enter into the portrait sessions with an open mind free from preconceptions. In other words, let the situation dictate the manner in which you shall work, rather than trying to plan and control the situation from the start.
2. Review your proof sheets and negatives in an individual meeting with the teacher no later than one week prior to the due date.
3. Hand in the best three prints.
Assignment Objective:
Outside the studio, good portraiture is a process that cannot be completely controlled, yet still requires training to feel confident and comfortable with uncertainty. Our craft must become so second nature that our freshness of mind will not be hindered by thoughts concerning technique. The goal is an intimacy that can result from engaging people one on one with respect. With this assignment we are practicing to be sensitive and flexible within the picture-taking situation as it presents itself. We begin to see the image as a gift that is dependent on our openness.
Suggestions:
Be prepared for all situations insofar as your film and equipment is concerned. You may need a lot of time with your subject. When the right moment, light, and feeling come together, cut loose your inhibitions and shoot as many images as possible. Edit mercilessly.
