Approaches To Studio Lighting
Assignment #1 Reproduction of Artwork
Please hand in this sheet in a protective plastic sleeve together with two slides in a polypropylene slide sheet, or a CD with two RAW digital files, two unflattened TIFF or PSD files, and two jpeg files.
Assignment Description:
This assignment requires two approaches and two images. Firstly, use either a 35mm SLR with slide film or a digital SLR to reproduce one of your own photographs on a copy stand. Secondly, photograph a large artwork hanging on the wall. Prepare two slides or digital files for critique, and bring the originals for comparison. Both orignals should be larger than something that could be easily scanned. No prints required.
Assignment Objective:
The reproduction of artworks is often required for lectures, catalogs, books, archives, and applications for schools and grants. It is the most objective form of photography insofar as it requires exact duplication free of all interpretation. Color, tone, value, and contrast must be as close to the original as technically possible. Only scale can vary.
Suggestions:
Use a level to make sure the camera's film (or sensor) and lens planes are parallel with the base of the copy stand (the subject plane). Use an incident hand-held light meter to measure the center and four corners of the artwork to be reproduced. These light readings should match within 1/10th of an f. stop. If shooting transparencies, Kodak EPN will render the truest color for flash, and Kodak EPY will work best with tungsten light. If using digital capture, set the color temperature within your camera's menu appropriately.
Evaluation Criteria:
Resemblance to the original artworks with regards to sharpness, color, value, tone, and contrast.
