Approaches To Studio Lighting
Assignment #3 Texture
Please hand in your unmounted print in a polyethylene or polypropylene storage bag together with conservation board and this sheet.
Assignment Description:
Use a 4x5 view camera to photograph a highly textured object using angled side lighting with moderate fill. Hand in either an 11 x 14 inch silver-gelatin black and white print, or an archival color ink jet print of similar dimensions.
Assignment Objective:
This assignment will help the photographer understand how to reproduce form and volume with particular emphasis on surface texture.
Suggestions:
When photographing objects with special textures it is necessary to graze the surface of the objects with light, from one side. A fill light or reflectors can be used to control the contrast, that is to say, the softness or harshness of the object's appearance. Essentially, we will be simulating early morning and late afternoon light in the studio.
Evaluation Criteria:
Craftsmanship - Sharpness
Exposure (full shadow and highlight detail)
Contrast (a solid black, a bright white, and a full range of gray values)
Value (appropriate lightness / darkness)
Needs dodging and/or burning
Cleanness (no dust, water spots, scratches)
Print damage
Aesthetic / Conceptual refinement (accomplishes assignment description and meets objective)
