Assignment #2 – The Studio Portrait



Please hand in this sheet in a protective plastic sleeve together with your proof sheet(s), your print, and a piece of acid-free conservation board.

Assignment Description:
Make a minimum of one formal studio portrait using strobes.  You are encouraged to try a number of different lighting strategies such as Rembrandt lighting, butterfly lighting, side lighting, etc.  Each student will be scheduled a specific time slot for use of the studio, with a Hasselblad medium format camera.

Assignment Objective:
The emphasis of this assignment will be to become competent in controlled studio lighting with flash strobes.  The student will demonstrate their understanding of lighting ratios and set-ups.

Suggestions:
Plot out diagrams of the placement, diffusion, and intensity of the lights before beginning.

Evaluation Criteria:
Craftsmanship - Sharpness
Exposure (full shadow and highlight detail)
Contrast (a solid black, a bright white, and a full range of gray values)
Value (appropriate lightness / darkness)
Needs dodging and/or burning
Cleanness (no dust, water spots, scratches)
Print damage
Aesthetic / Conceptual refinement (accomplishes assignment description and meets objective)
