Assignment #2 - Typologies Please hand in this sheet together with your print packed in an archival clear sleeve with museum board backing. Mount four 5 x 7 inch fiber base prints on a 16 x 20 inch board, or use layers in Photoshop to output 4 digital images on one piece of 16x 20 inch paper. If working digitally, include a CD with unflattened adjustment layers, and contact sheets of your RAW files. If working with traditional black and white, include contact sheets. If working hybrid (scanned negatives or transparencies), include a small 4 x 6 contact sheet provided by a commercial lab, or your original transparencies in plastic sheets. If any of the above elements are missing the assignment will be marked "incomplete." Assignment Description: Use your camera to collect something that would otherwise be too big, expensive, impractical, or impossible to gather. Focus on something you care about. Photograph the same sort of thing repeatedly in a formulaic manner. Assignment Objective: Typologies are primarilly an important extension of the documentary genre. This assignment will give the student an opportunity to familiarize him or herself with its historical and contemporary value. We will endeavor to understand how the typological approach cultivates the illusion of objectivity. Suggestions: Try to work on days when the light and weather are consistent. Decide from the beginning how you are going to approach your subject in terms of angle, scale, background, etc. Keep it consistent so that the images fit together. Use the same camera, lens, and film for each shot. All this will draw the viewer's attention to comparing the subtle and obvious differences of your chosen subject matter, rather than differences in print variation and photographic method. Evaluation Criteria: Craftsmanship - Sharpness Exposure (full shadow and highlight detail) Contrast (a solid black, a bright white, and a full range of gray values) Value (appropriate lightness / darkness) Needs dodging and/or burning Cleanness (no dust, water spots, scratches) Mounting (clean and straight edges parallel to board, well adhered, no heat damage) Print damage Aesthetic / Conceptual refinement (accomplishes assignment description and meets objective) Grade ___________ Student Name_______________________________ Teacher Comments: |
