Assignment #3 - Print "Density" - Picturing the Unnoticed

Please hand in this sheet in a clear protective sleeve together with your prints and proof sheet(s).

Assignment Description:
Photograph something 'everyday' in the sense that the everyday is what escapes notice (James Welling). This assignment can be done with either film or digital capture.

Make three prints in the darkroom in the following sequence.
Print #1 should be printed the correct "density" (lightness / darkness).
Print #2 should be printed lighter by either exposing the paper for half the amount of time or by closing the f.stop on the enlarger one stop smaller.
Print #3 should be printed darker by either exposing the paper for double the amount of time used for print #1 or by opening the f. stop on the enlarger one stop larger.

Synonyms for print "density," the term used by the author of our textbook, are "value," "brightness," and "lightness/darkness."

Assignment Objective:
The point of this assignment is to open up to the lyrical potential of photography through focusing our awareness on the hitherto overlooked and translating that into a two-dimensional visual experience. The technical objective of this assignment is to understand how to manipulate value (lightness / darkness) in the darkroom.

Suggestions:
Slow down and spend a day on foot or bicycle with a spirit of discovery. Use the knowledge acquired from the first three assignments in the service of this search.

Evaluation Criteria:
Craftsmanship - Sharpness (appropriate, either shallow or deep)
Exposure (full shadow and highlight detail)
Contrast (a solid black, a bright white, and a full range of gray values)
Value (appropriate lightness / darkness) of all three prints
Needs dodging and / or burning

Cleanness (no dust, scratches, water spots)

Aesthetic / Conceptual refinement (accomplishes assignment description and meets objective)
