Working with very small and very large numbers is a routine part of studying the earth.  Exponents are used in a number of ways, from providing a scale for earthquake measurement to scientific notation.  As with other topics in this tutorial, you will only need to deal with a few simple concepts here, but you should be able to apply them with precision.
