COURSE DESCRIPTION
As an introduction to the teaching profession, students will be exposed to
the philosophies of education, history of education in America, the sociology of
education, contemporary issues in education, and the role of education in
American society. All of these areas will be studied with a view toward social
justice and in relationship to the "real world" of teaching today. The
California Standards for the Teaching Profession will frame the discussion and
pedagogy. Students will experience field work and relate that to the knowledge
they acquire. Reading, thinking, writing and speaking will
be ongoing activities.
ATTENDANCE
Your attendance in the class is essential. Every class will develop your thinking and knowledge about teaching and how to be an outstanding teacher. Be ready with the reading, writing, projects, assignments and/or preparation at every class and you will find yourself growing more confident and capable to participate in this profession.
If you are not fully prepared for a class, attend anyway. You will gain more by
attending and participating in whatever you can than missing class.ABSENCE POLICY
Because our class only meets once a week, more than two absences can lead to
a drop. Please communicate with me regarding extenuating circumstances. Use
absences only when you are ill or have a true family emergency.
LATENESS POLICY
Being punctual to class is part of viewing yourself as a professional. Lateness is rude and distracting. Three latenesses will equal an absence. Leaving early constitutes an absence.
DISTRACTIONS AND CLASS ETIQUETTE
Along with promptness, being attentive and allowing others to concentrate in class are necessary rules of behavior. An atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy will be maintained at all times.
Turn off cell phones while in class. I do not accept any excuse for calls during class. If your cell phone rings, you will be asked to leave class and not return.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
All assignments and projects are required and constitute part of your grade. Consequently, if you neglect to submit one, you will receive an "F" for it. Some graded work can be redone. Some work is graded holistically. All of your effort in this class will count, including your participation.
When you are working in groups, you are responsible for your share of the work. In this class, everyone has the right to be heard and is responsible for completing the work.
You will begin a portfolio in this class which will be an essential part of your development as a teacher. Keep all assignments and projects so you can make the best selection when the time comes for your portfolio work.
