Daily Syllabus

Recommended Text: Greenblatt, Stephen, ed. The Norton Shakespeare. 2nd ed. New York: Norton & Company, 2008.

Course Objectives: English 228 is designed to introduce the student to Shakespeare's plays. To do so, we will read plays from each of the important genres: Comedy, History, Tragedy.  In this course we will focus first on reading and comprehending Elizabethan English; we will then turn our attention to the thematic issues addressed in the plays so that by the time we read the tragedies you should be well prepared to read and comprehend the language, and identify the important thematic issues being addressed in each of these signifacant dramatic works.

Course Requirements. Requirements include daily quizzes (various points), various writing assignments (various points), and 2 exams (1000 points each). Final grades are calculated as a percentage of the total points possible. Those students earning 90% or more of the total points possible will receive an "A"; those earning 80% to 89% of the total points possible will earn a "B"; 70% to 79%, a "C"; 60%-69%, a "D"; 59% or below, an "F."

At the beginning of each class you will be quizzed on the reading material assigned for that day or any of the lecture material from a previous class period. You will not be able to take the quiz if you are absent or tardy or if you plan to leave before class is dismissed. No make-up quizzes will be given.

Absenteeism: I will follow the school policy as it is stated in the catalogue and the schedule of classes.
