"It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters in the end."
     -- Ursula K. Le Guin

The Hero's Journey is a popular story motif that has lasted the test of time, but not all heroes deal with their challenges in the same way. Some heroes resist the call to action, while others boldly accept the challenge. While some heroes willing face the journey, others are thrown into an adventure. Some heroes must physically battle dragons, while others must battle the dragons within them.

For this essay you will look at the journey and adventure of Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and a movie character of your choice. How are the challenges each hero faces the same (Comparison)? How are they different (Contrast)? What has each hero learned through the journey? How is each hero a better person as a result of the journey? What can readers learn from these similarities and differences? What is their significance?

You are free to choose any movie character, but you may not use the character you analyzed in essay #2. I would again recommend that you select a movie that is out on video or DVD so that you can watch the movie several times in order to develop a solid comparison. Watch the details! You need to be sure that you are presenting accurate information to your readers. Check the spelling of names, and get the plot details straight. Also, remember that your analysis is the focus of your essay, not plot summary.

Your essay will need to be a MINIMUM of FIVE PAGES in length. You will need to include a bibliography that follows MLA Documentation and provide in-text citations. You must utilize a minimum of five resources, two of which will be the movies themselves, as you craft your essay. If you aren’t sure how to cite your sources, you will need to get assistance. You can look at the MLA Documentation resource page, you can use your Lannon, you can talk to a tutor, or you can come and talk to me. Remember that doing documentation is simply a matter of paying attention to the little details.

Prior to submitting your essay to me in class, you must submit your essay to Turnitin.com. Assignments that have not been submitted to Turnitin will not be evaluated.

When you turn in your final draft you will need to include the following items (in this order):

  1. The final draft of the essay (I will grade whatever is on the top of the pile).  Your essay must follow the format outlined.  Essays that are not typed in the prescribed format will be returned unread and ungraded.

  2. A LETTER to me in which you discuss what interested you about this topic.  Describe any difficulties you had with the assignment and how you attempted to overcome those difficulties.  And finally, what do you think the strengths of your essay are, and what would you still like to work on?  Keep in mind that this last question is not simply an opportunity for you to “sell” your work.  I want your honest assessment.  Your letter should be one page hand-written.  Don’t try to write the letter in the five minutes before class.  I want to see that you have put some thought into these questions.

  3. All rough drafts and prewriting (including any activities we do in class related to this assignment)

When you come to class the day your extended definition essay is due, your packet should be ready to go.  I will not have a stapler or paper clips with me.  You need to take care of all of this before you come to class.
