Week 1

In Class: Discuss Syllabus and Expectations / Establish Class Contract / Getting to Know You

Homework for Next Class:

  • Get books and supplies
  • Get notebook materials organized. Be prepared to share your organization strategy with your classmates.
  • Read: College Survival 101
  • Write a 250 word response to College Survival 101 (your response needs to be typed). This is a response, not a summary, so don’t just write out what the essay was about. What are your thoughts about the essay? What did you learn that you didn’t know before? What surprised you?

In Class: Syllabus Quiz / Voices from the Past / Discuss Time Management / Notebooks

  •  Complete the StrengthsQuest Assessment: You will find the code on the inner cover of your text book.
  • Print out your Top 5 Certificate (two copies, one for me and one for you)
  •  Read StrengthsQuest pages 1-23.
  • Read “Affirming Your Signature Themes” that begins on page 25, find the sections that describe your top five themes.  As you read about your top five strengths, underline or highlight each or, phrase, or sentence that reminds you of yourself.
  • Read Writing with Power Part I (pages 3-49.) For each of the chapters, write out the main idea(s) of the chapter. (You will be turning this in. I would encourage you to underline the main ideas in the book itself so they will be easier to find later as well as typing out the main ideas IN YOUR OWN WORDS for submission in class).

Week 2

In Class: Exploring Our Strengths. / Writing with Power (Group Activity)

What’s Due:

  • StrengthsQuest Top 5 Certificate
  • Writing with Power—Main Ideas.

Homework for Next Class:

  • Contact three people who know and love you. Read your Signature Themes and descriptions to them. Read each description, one at a time, and ask “Do you see this in me?” If the person says, “Yes.” Then ask “Can you give me an example of when you have seen this theme in me?” I would encourage you to record this conversation if the person is comfortable with that. At the very least, take lots of notes.

In- Class: Begin Essay #1 StrengthsQuest / Prewriting Techniques – Freewriting / Discuss Essay Format and Common Mistakes / Writing Process Checklist

What’s Due:

  • Notes from interview with three loved ones.

  • Write out a complete draft of Essay #1
  • Read Writing with Power Part II (pages 47-119). For each of the chapters, write out the main idea(s) of the chapter. (You will be turning this in. Homework for Next Class:

  • Finish Essay #1 and Assemble Essay Packet. You need to include all prewriting, drafts, and peer reviews as well as all of your StrengthsQuest activities and notes from your 3 interviews.
  • Read Writing with Power Part III (pages 121-175). For each of the chapters, write out the main idea(s) of the chapter. (You will be turning this in. I would encourage you to underline the main ideas in the book itself so they will be easier to find later as well as typing out the main ideas IN YOUR OWN WORDS for submission in class).  
  • Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes when you come to class next Wednesday.
