Course Syllabus


Course Description:
This course is designed to increase reading speed and comprehension in college-level reading material.  Emphasis is placed on developing an improved reading method through learning rapid reading techniques, gaining flexibility in adjusting reading speed to suit purpose for reading and difficulty of the material, overcoming habits of regression and sub-vocalization, recognizing and using basic writing structures and literary elements as aids to comprehension in depth, and mastering speed study techniques and speed research techniques.  All methods and techniques are applied to various types of college-level reading materials.


Course Objectives:
Through lecture, paired work, collaborative learning, text exercises, computer and Internet access and outside readings, the student will be able to:

1.  Utilize and modify a variety of hand-movements while practicing
      eye-pacing drills
2.  Utilize speed reading techniques when reading short stories and novels
3.  Distinguish between sharp and soft focus while speed reading
4.  Apply speed reading techniques to journalistic writing
5.  Dis tinguish between skimming and scanning  and apply techniques in
     speed reading
6.  Annotate while speed reading critical reading material
7.  Utilize the Basic Speed Study Method to increase comprehension in
     fiction, history, and texts with specialized vocabulary
8.  Learn the method of Speed Research reading

Office Hours:
My office is located in the Santa Barbara Bldg. Office hours will be given to you the first session of class.

Attendance: Attendance in class is very important, particularly at the beginning of the course because of the various techniques being demonstrated.  Make-up tests are not allowed, except for absences due to unusual circumstances. If there is a legitimate reason for your absence, please see me to arrange a time to make up any missed assignments.

 

Grading: The grade distribution will be as follows:

Classwork & Assignments = 40%
Tests = 20%
Final Exam = 20%
Final Homework Packet = 20%

*Important: It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw
  himself/herself from any class that he/she decides not to
  complete.

**Nota Bene: The instructor reserves the right to amend, adjust, or
