Basic Reading Skills

Course Syllabus

Course Description: This course is designed for students who wish to improve their basic reading skills.  Coursework includes work on fundamental word analysis skills and fundamental comprehension skills.  Reading 43 is offered on a CREDIT/NO CREDIT basis only.

Course Objectives: Through lectures, small group discussion, collaborative learning, text exercises, and computer technology the student will learn how to:

  1. Utilize word attack skills while developing proficiency in phonetic analysis.
  2. Use a college level English dictionary as an aid to pronunciation and word meaning.
  3. Unlock the meaning of words by utilizing contextual clues.
  4. Recognize and identify the main idea in paragraphs and reading selections.
  5. Distinguish between major and minor supporting details.
  6. Recognize transitions and patterns of organization in paragraphs and reading selections.
  7. Make inferences and draw conclusions based upon the information given in the reading selection.

Attendance:
Attendance in class is very important. Make-up tests are not allowed, except for absences due to unusual circumstances. If there is a legitimate reason for your absence, please see me to arrange a time to make up any missed assignments.

Grading: The grade distribution will be as follows:            

Classwork & Mastery Tests = 20%
Journals  = 10%
Midterm = 30%
Final Exam =  40%

Important: It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw himself/herself from any class that he/she decides not to complete.

Nota Bene: The instructor reserves the right to amend, adjust, or otherwise modify this syllabus at any time during the semester.
