Effective Study Methods for College
Course Syllabus
Course Description: This course is designed to increase the students
success in college, by assisting the student in obtaining the knowledge and skills
necessary to reach his/her educational goals. Topics that will be covered include: time
management, memory techniques, methods for reading textbooks efficiently, note-taking
techniques, how to use the library, use of the computer as a communication and research
tool, test-taking strategies, learning styles, communication across cultures, the
importance of academic planning, strategies for success in various academic disciplines,
and personal issues that face many college students.
Course Objectives: Through lectures, small group discussion, collaborative
learning, text exercises, videos, computer and Internet access and outside readings, the
student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the ability to manage time more effectively
- Learn memory-training techniques
- Study and comprehend textbooks more efficiently
- Learn how to take and organize lecture and textbook notes
- Develop understanding through practical experience in writing and summarizing
- Become familiar with all areas of the library
- Develop specific steps for setting and achieving academic and personal goals
- Become familiar with computer technology and accessing the Internet
- Learn how to prepare for and take tests
- Examine personal ideas and decisions regarding issues such as relationships,
health
practices, budgeting money, and career selection
- Discuss the importance of valuing diversity
- Evaluate his/her learning style, and study-reading strategies

Office hours will be given to you the first session of class and are posted
at my office.
Attendance: Attendance in class is very important. Make-up tests are not
allowed, except for absences due to unusual circumstances. If there is a legitimate reason
for your absence, please see me to arrange a time to make up any missed assignments.
Grading: The grade distribution will be as follows:
