LEARNING STRATEGIES

Reading in college is often called purposeful reading or reflective reading. It requires the student to think critically, analyze logically, and to be able to decipher with accuracy the author's intended meaning.

This requires the student to utilize their cognitive ability while reflecting on prior knowledge to figure out what the author is saying about a given subject.

When we read, we are deciphering the words that the author has decided would translate his/her ideas and experiences into meaning. The task, of translating words into the intended meaning or ideas of the author, can be a daunting one for most college students.

The process of reading critically requires the student to approach the reading act in an analytic, evaluative, and creative manner. This can be very challenging, and few college students are able to successfully do this early on in their academic career.

To assist you with this process, and to provide you with specific information on how to read critically and successfully learn in college, the following websites are being provided for your perusal and use. Spend some time exploring them, and I'm sure you will find a wealth of information to assist you with having a most successful experience in your Reading course, as well in college in general.
