Research Articles
Directions for your Partner Assignments:
1. Go to the designated website.
2. Read the article or articles for the assignment.
3. Working collaboratively with your partner, briefly
summarize
the article's contents as outlined in your
textbook. This should be
approximately 2/3 of a typed page long. The
section should be
designated as Roman numeral I ---
Example: I. Summary:
Then skip a line and begin typing your
summary.
4. The next step is
to identify the pattern of organization
of the
article. The answer should only be a few
words long. This should
be designated as Roman numeral II ---
Example: II. Pattern of
Organization:
5. The last part of the assignment is Critical
Analysis. This should
be designated by Roman numeral
III ---
Example: III. Critical Analysis:
Then skip a line and write
a 1/2 to 2/3 of a page personal
critique of
the article. You should include in the article whether
you agree with the author's thesis, and whether the author
substantiated his/her point with valid evidential proof or
support.
6. The assignment should be approximately 2 type-written pages
long. Make sure you include a "title page" with
the following
information on it:
The number of the partner assignment.
Example: Partner Assignment #1
The title of the article and the author.
The web address of the article.
*All of this should be centered half-way down the title page.
At the bottom of the title page, you need to include your names,
the class (Rdg. 54 TOL, M/W, 12:30); the
class section #;
my name (Professor G. Codd); and the date.
The assignment should be submitted in a cover or folder. You can
drop the
assignment off on the due-date in my mailbox, Santa
Barbara building.
ASSIGNMENT #1: You can use either of the
following two websites for your first partner assignment.
1. First website ... http://www.thecrimson.com/archives.aspx
When you get to Harvard's magazine archives' webpage, type the word
"Manners" in the SEARCH box. Then enter the
month/day/year in the DATE RANGE boxes. You can search for
articles written by students on this topic as far back as 1873 to the present
year.
2. Second website .... http://www.news.harvard.edu/gazette/
You can choose one of the current articles in Harvard's Gazette
magazine, or you can access a previous issue by clicking on the word
"PREVIOUS" at the top of the webpage. This will take you to the Gazette's
back issues.
You and your partner need to select an article from one of the back issues and follow the directions above for writing the assignment. The assignment must be type-written, with a title page (including the web-address of the article), and it must be placed in a report cover. Place the assignment in my mailbox in the Santa Barbara bldg.

ASSIGNMENT #2:
Use one of the major news websites
and select a current event article. Follow the same directions above that you
did with assignment #1.

ASSIGNMENT #3: Go to the following website: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gwhtml/gwhome.html
When you get to the Library of Congress's "George Washington webpage," scroll down and click on "Essays About the George Washington Papers."
You can explore some of the associated links and articles. The purpose of this assignment is for you to learn more about how George Washington's letters chronicled the history of the beginnings of the United States for all posterity.
Follow the same format as assignments #1 and #2, but for assignment #3 add a section on "Fact and Opinion". In this section, cite some of the "facts" in the article/s and some of the "opinions" that the author makes.

ASSIGNMENT #4:
Select 5 topics from your textbook and find 5 websites for each
topic, for a total of 25 websites.
You can use "learning styles" as one of the 5 topics if you wish.
Each topic heading should be in a separate section, indicated by a roman numeral.
Example:
I. Main Idea
For each website you are to type the website, give a brief summary of the site,
and then rate it (Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor). The summary of the site
should be a short paragraph (5 or 6 sentences long). You can do this with a partner or
by yourself. You do not have to wait until the end of the semester to begin this
assignment. You can begin the assignment right away. The Project is to be
turned in by the Saturday before Final Exam week.
You are to type the assignment, making sure there is a title page and a report cover. It is to be turned in to my mailbox in the Santa Barbara bldg.
