Course Description
This course is a survey of western
classical music focusing on the histories of Europe and the United States. Main
topics include the musical styles and composers of the Middle Ages, Renaissance,
Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and the Contemporary era. Subtopics included are
the influence of non-western cultures on western art music, gender issues in the
history of music, and film music. Emphasis throughout this course is on
listening and understanding music in various historical and cultural contexts.

q Due at beginning of class, no late papers accepted
