Course Description
This course serves as an introduction to non-western folk, art, and popular music.  Emphasis is placed on understanding the substantive features of music cultures as well as the social, cultural, political, and economic factors that contribute to the diversity of musical traditions throughout the world's cultures.
 

Required Text
Titon, Jeff Todd ed. 1996. Worlds of Music: An Introduction to the Music of the World’s Peoples. New York: Schirmer Books.

 

Grading
 

20 Points (5 points each): Each week, except when noted, you will post comments for the class discussion board. The questions will be posted on Monday. 

 

40 Points: Two Exams (20 points each)
Multiple choice exams (Pristine Scantron 882-E)
Knowledge of reading assignments, lectures, listening ability, and videos
 

10 Points: Concert Report
Must attend one concert and write about observations and opinions
3 page typed report, 12 point type size, times or times new roman font, black ink
Due at beginning of class, no late papers accepted
Title centered at top of report
No title page, binding, colored paper, etc.
 

30 Points: Research Project – 5 points (Topic/Bibliography); 10 points (Outline); 15 points (Presentation)
Research topic of your choosing related to course material.
 

100 Points total for final grade (A=100-90; B=89-80; C=79-70; D=69-60; F=59-50)
