CIS 121 - Introduction to the Internet
General
Information
General Introduction
This class covers an overview of the various resources available on the
Internet. It provides the student with an introduction to the Internet. You should be familiar with
basic computer literacy topics, such as: basic use of Windows, cut and past,
file structure, file naming. It is aimed at the student who is self
motivated, who needs a flexible schedule and who works well independently.
I believe you will find your exploration of the Internet an exciting and
worthwhile adventure. I am looking forward to having you in class and
communicating with you through the use of technology.
Information for the class will be found on the class WebCT web site. I
expect you to reference this site on a regular basis. Changes to schedule,
announcements, date for exams are posted there and the responsibility of the
student to access. Make special note of the exam and due date. If
there are problems you MUST contact me before the
date and work out needed arrangements.
Attendance and class
activity
- Students are expected to communicate with the instructor at least once
EVERY week. This communication can take the following forms:
submit an assignment, send a email for help or clarification, or just sent an
email indicating where you are in your course progress.
- If I do not hear from you for a protracted period of time I will assume
you are planning to NOT complete the class.
In this case you will be dropped.
- This is a class which requires students to do the work consistently each
week. This class is short and there is not excessive time to complete
the work. You should plan to be doing and submitting your assignments
each week.
Lectures, Assignment, Handouts, and student data
files
- Lab assignments, syllabus, help documents, some lecture notes,
and supporting links will all be posted on the WebCt web site.
http://webct.cerritos.edu/
- Click on Courses
- You will be asked to set up 'My
WebCT'
- Click on 'CIS'
- Click on 'CIS 121 with the correct ticket
number and session'
- You will be expected to go to the WebCT class site to retrieve and submit
your assignments.
- You will find the digital submission sheets for the lab on the WebCT class
website.
- You should use the NOTEPAD or a ASCII text editor to enter your answers to
the questions found in the lab assignments. Do not use products like WORD,
FrontPage, or other editors.
- You will need diskettes to store the labs submission sheets while you are
working on them. (Note: DO NOT STORE ANY OF YOUR WORK ON
THE COLLEGE COMPUTER HARD DRIVES.)
- All assignment submission sheets, except lab 10, will be submitted
through WebCT should be
scanned for viruses prior to sending.
- Lab 10, a web page should include ALL files included in the WebPages.
- All assignments will include all information required for the assignment.
Submitting Assignments
- ALL assignments MUST be submitted via WebCT. No
Assignment will be accepted on traditional paper. The only
exceptions will be identified in the lab instructions.
- Once the assignments/labs are completed they are to submitted in one of
the following 2 ways:
- Submit via WebCT - instructions to
follow.
- (This is not really a choice - but an
alternative if submission via WebCT is not working.) Email to your
instructor all the files needed for this
assignment. These are best sent via email as attachments. If
you have several files or large files, you may want to attach them to
more than one email message. You will find that the method of
doing attachments to the college email system is quite problematic, so
you should use either an Internet Service Provider or a Hot Mail
account. ALL files should be scanned
for viruses before sending/submitting.
- Your assignments should contain your name at the top of the submission
sheet/document.
- Once an assignment has been submitted via WebCT, and the assignment is
graded, the grade will be available in your students records.
The assignments should be complete when submitted. If the assignments
are not complete, you may correct the assignment then resubmit. If you
resubmit your assignment for grading after you correct it, the maximum points
for the assignment will be 28 points. You should test your web pages and
verify that they are complete and correct prior to submitting.
- If you have any questions while doing the assignments feel free to contact
me for clarification, suggestions, and /or help.
- Always submit a copy of your assignment. ALWAYS retain the original
copy of your assignment.
Exams
- The midterm and final will be given online. The exact dates for
these exams are posted on the class website. Please check
dates and times.
- The midterm and final will be available on the web site for a fixed time
period. Students will be expected to access the exams during that time
period.
- The exams will be open book and open notes.
- It is expected that students will take the exam by themselves and not with
the counsel of others. Honesty is expected.
- The exams submits your test answers directly to your instructor.
- Student who have a problem with the time/date of any exam MUST contact the Instructor prior to the exam and make
other arrangements.
Help/Questions
- A variety of help documents and links are available on the class web
page. You might want to refer to them when you first have questions on a
particular topic.
- A listserv/mailserv has been set up for this class. I will put all
of the students on this mailserv. If your questions would be of interest
to others, please direct your question to the mailserv. I will answer
the question using the mailserv also.
- The class mailserv is epi-list@cerritos.edu

use that NT account to access the computers on campus. You may use any other
account that you have available to you. If you plan to use accounts
other than your Cerritos College account you MUST
email or otherwise notify your instructor of your other email address.
- If you do not have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) you should consider
getting a free hot mail account. Hot mail
accounts are available at http://www.hotmail.com
- If your ISP account does not contain your name you must ALWAYS include your name in your assignment.
- You may use the computers in either the LA-3, LA-4, LA-5, LA-6, Computer
labs located in the Learning Resource Center or CAI (LAP) computer labs to
complete your assignments. The CAI/LAP lab is located in the Learning
