Your grade on an assignment will be based on: proper completion of the assigned problem, correct formatting, spelling and punctuation. For most of the assignments there will be a picture in the book of what the document ( Word ), presentation ( PowerPoint ) worksheet ( Excel ) or table/query/form/report ( Access ) should look like if you have followed the instructions correctly.
Web Site/ Talon Net /CoursePort
The information for this course is currently available on my website primarily. Most sections will use a 2nd website set up on Talon Net (the Cerritos College Course Management System.)
Exams and quizzes:
Remember you should be familiar with the material prior to taking the exam/quiz as you will not have time to read the material and complete the exam/quiz in the time provided, so only use it if you are not sure of an answer. Don't rely on the book for all questions as time will not be adequate.
TalonNet keeps track of the time while you are doing an exam/quiz so you will always know how much time you have left.
Make sure you start the exam in TalonNet in time to complete the exam before the ending of the availability time period.
Presentations and Other Materials;
The presentations for the text book will be used in the traditional section during the lectures. To access the presentations from off campus, you will need either Microsoft Office PowerPoint or a PowerPoint viewer plug-in for your browser. Here is a link to a PowerPoint 2007 viewer. PowerPoint 2007 Viewer If you are in the Onlinew section, it is a good idea to go through the presentations as part of your preparation for exams.
Some students find it useful to bring the lecture book to class and follow along in it during the lectures. You can even print out the presentations in a 3, 4, or 6-up handout format and then annotate the presentations to add notes. You really do not need to take many notes for this class ( traditional section ).
You may also need Adobe Acrobat Reader as sometimes I post things as PDF documents. Here is a link to download Acrobat Reader: Acrobat Reader 8
Syllabus
Please be aware that the syllabus posted to the web is TENTATIVE. It is subject to change. As the course progresses, it may become necessary to make some changes to sequence, content and/or dates.
The OL section is intended to mirror the traditional sections. Any changes to the syllabus will be announced in my traditional section classes and the syllabus posted to the web will be updated for the students in the OL section. Generally, if I make substantive changes to the syllabus I will also send out an email message. An announcement will be posted in TalonNet or an email will be sent.
The syllabus shows what topics are being covered each week as well as what assignment will be due and if there will be a test that week.
The syllabus is accessible from my web site or within TalonNet. TalonNet actually uses a link to my web site to display the syllabus.
Teaching Schedule & Office Hours
On my web site start page www.cerritos.edu/hohly is a link for my teaching schedule and office hours.
You may always visit me during an office hour. I welcome the opportunity to help you. If there are personal problems or challenges that are hindering your progress please come by and let me see if I can help you in some way.
For CIS 101 - Discovering Computers Fundamentals 5th Edition Course Port Site
You should go through the Checkpoint at the end of each chapter in the Discovering Computers Fundamentals lecture book..
The Checkpoint is available from the Course Port site as are practice tests and other resources. These are important tools to use to prepare for exams.
There is a link on my CIS 101 web site you can use to access the CoursePort site. You must register with the site in order to use the resources. As part of your registration, you will need to click on the image of the Discovering Computers Fundamentals 5th Edition book. This same site is used with many other Course Technology books so you need to specify which book you will be using.
Here is what the CoursePort site looks like ( it is the screen displayed when you click the link on my web page ):

After you have registered successfully and logged in, you will see a screen similar to the following:

Here is what the site looks like for the Discovering Computers Fundamentals site:

Here is what the page looks like when you click on the Chapter 1 icon on the toolbar:

You should go through the Checkpoint and take a practice test before taking the actual quiz for a chapter. You may take the practice tests as many times as you like. When you complete a practice test and submit it, it will redisplay the test and show you which questions you got right and wrong. It will also display where in the book the material can be found if you want to go back and read about it.
Academic Honesty
You are required to do your own work for this class.
All of the following activities are considered cheating:
Cheating may result in 0 points for an assignment or exam. You may also be dropped from the class. If you are given a zero for cheating on an assignment or exam there will be no makeup. You cheat, you lose.
Working collaboratively to understand the requirements of an assignment or how to use the software ( Windows, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access ) with another student is OK. However… every student is expected to do the assignments individually.
Collaboration does not mean one student sits at the computer and one or more other students watch and make suggestions! I will not accept an assignment submitted by two or more students for which I find the content to be identical. This includes spouses, siblings, parents/children, coworkers, lovers, etc.. You may not turn in work that has been performed by somebody else! No exceptions!!!
Extra Credit
It is not my philosophy to offer extra credit!
Please read the material in your books and any handouts I may provide you. Follow all instructions and do a thorough job on your assignments, and finally make sure you adequately prepare for exams.
Do not ask for an opportunity to do extra credit to make up for points lost on assignments or exams.
Attendance (found in Schedule of classes)
To meet attendance requirements, I need to hear from you or personally see you ( traditional section ) each week.
Online student: I must hear from you at least once a week. Submitting an assignment and/or taking an exam, attending a traditional section lecture or even sending an email message telling me you are still in the class and working ( especially if you don’t turn in an assignment on time ) are all acceptable ways of meeting "attendance" requirements.
Please read the section "Attendance and Grading" in the Schedule of classes. It explains the requirements for attendance, authorized and excused absences, and grounds for dismissal from a course.
Schedule of Classes Text:
ATTENDANCE
It is the responsibility of students to attend classes regularly and apply themselves to the college studies in which they are enrolled. When students have been absent due to illness, they should report to their instructor to explain the absence. Listed below are two types of absences which permit the making up of work missed, provided that the work is of such a nature that it can be made up.
1.
AUTHORIZED ABSENCE: For an approved educational field trip or school activity.2.
EXCUSED ABSENCE: For illness, injury, or quarantine. NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR A CLASS IN WHICH A STUDENT IS NOT OFFICIALLY ENROLLED. Students must attend the first class meeting or their names may be removed from the roll to allow another student seeking admission on an availability card to enter. If a student is unable to attend the first class meeting, the instructor must be notified.REMOVAL FROM CLASS
A student may be involuntarily removed from a course due to excessive absences, failure to meet prerequisite(s), or as a result of official disciplinary action. (California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Section 55003).
Excessive absences is absence from class 1 hour more that the hours of a class for two weeks.
Withdrawals (Found in Schedule of classes)
It is YOUR responsibility to drop this course if it becomes necessary. Withdrawals must be completed by the required withdrawal deadlines. These are listed at the bottom of the Syllabus. As the policy states, "Failure to officially withdraw from class(es) may result in an "F" grade for each class."
Please keep in mind that the college has an excessive withdrawal/failure policy. It you take a class and withdraw from it or fail it twice, you will not be permitted to sign up for the class again without permission from the Counseling Department. Permission is not automatically granted!
Schedule of Classes text:
WITHDRAWALS [TITLE V, SECTION 58004 (C) (3)]
Pursuant to Title 5, section 58004 and Cerritos College Board Policy, it is the student’s responsibility to participate fully in class (es), once enrollment is complete. However, should it become necessary to withdraw from class, it is the student’s responsibility to drop in person in the Admissions and Records Office or through MyCerritos.
THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY OF WITHDRAWAL FALLS TO THE STUDENT.
How to officially withdraw after enrollment ends:
Complete an Add/Drop card (available in the Admissions and Records Office) or for a faster response, use MyCerritos (http://my.cerritos.edu). Retain an updated printout for your records.
ALL WITHDRAWALS MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE LISTED DEADLINES. FAILURE TO OFFICIALLY WITHDRAW FROM CLASS(ES) MAY RESULT IN AN "F/FW" GRADE FOR EACH CLASS. See the "Calendar of Important Dates" for specific deadlines.
Student Computer Account
To login in to a computer account on campus, use your student number as your username. This should be a 7 digit number. If your student number has fewer than 7 digits, precede it with a 0. Your password will be your date of birth in mmddyy format.
Computer Labs
You can work on campus in the CIS labs in LA 3, 4, 5 or 6. LA 3 is generally the "open lab" but at times a different room may be made available as open lab. The days/hours the labs are open will be posted outside of the rooms. If you intend to work in the CIS labs, make sure you know what days/hours the labs are available.
You may also work in one of the big LRC computer labs.
----------------------------------
It is important for you to keep on schedule with the reading, submission of assignments, and exams. Most of the time when a student does not successfully complete a class it is because he/she got behind and couldn't catch up. Please don't let this happen to you.
Remember if you are a OL section student: You are also always welcome ( if your schedule does not conflict ) attend and listen to the lecture/lab with a traditional class.
Good luck in class. I hope you will find this an enjoyable learning experience.
